We see here that Jack Shaftoe christened the ship "Minerva" at the suggestion of Enoch Root. Coincidentally (or not?), Minerva happens to be the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Athena, of whom Enoch spoke of so highly in "Cryptonomicon."
