In the final years of the seventeenth century, an Italian adventurer going by the name of Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Careri became one of the first Europeans to complete a solo tour of the world using public transportation and provided inspiration to Jules Verne. It seems being thought to be a Papal spy paid off for him.
