Stub Mortise

As the name implies, Stub Mortises are shallow mortises, often only two inches deep. They generally located on the upper faces of Sill Beams, and are employed to locate the feet of Posts, particularly Wall posts, it is Not considered a Structural connection, and, there are never any pegs involved, and, even nails would have a negligable effect.

In addition, the mortises which recieve the tenons on the tops, and bottoms, of studing, Can also be called "Stub Mortises", However, in hthis case, there can be a great deal of regional variation in the general shape, and function.

When a Framer speaks of a "Stub Mortise", they are typicaly refering to those found beneath Major Posts, or Door Posts.
