Oddly enough Cardinal Richelieu was claimed to be an epileptic. Mugwort, copper, mercury, and zinc oxide were among the treatments used during the Renaissance, and not till the 19th century were substances discovered that actually worked.

With the additional fact that heavy metal poisoning (e.g. lead, mercury etc.) causes seizures in some instances anyway! BenW
